Singapore’s LeVeL33 is world’s highest micro-brewery: Guinness World Records | The Straits Times
SINGAPORE – Singapore bar-restaurant LeVeL33 will soon scale new heights by achieving the record for the world’s highest micro-brewery in a building, according to Guinness World Records.
Located on the 33rd floor of Marina Bay Financial Centre Tower 1 in Marina Boulevard, 149m above ground, it will have its record authenticated by the organisation in a ceremony on March 12.
The rooftop dining concept, which has long been a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike to enjoy panoramic views of the Singapore skyline, is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2025.
LeVeL33’s founder Martin Bem, 57, says that while the altitude does not affect the brews, establishing his 7,500 sq ft brewery on the 33rd floor in 2010 came with creative challenges.
“We had massive challenges, especially with bringing the brewery up to the 33rd floor, which has never been done before worldwide,” he tells The Straits Times.
The service lift was too small for much of the brewery’s equipment. In the end, bringing in the brewery’s tanks meant having to deconstruct part of the building’s facade and using a crane.
Another challenge arose from ensuring water pressure was sufficient for the brewing process on the high floor. This meant that the establishment had to procure a backup 1,000-litre water tank.
Beers served at LeVeL33 are produced on-site, in a range of traditional old- and new-world styles. A pint starts at $16.90. The micro-brewery’s equipment is part of the bar’s aesthetic, with copper kettles and tanks stretching across the venue space.
“We always knew we were the highest micro-brewery, but it is quite a tedious and expensive exercise to get the Guinness World Record authenticated,” says Dr Bem, an Austrian with a PhD in economics, adding that he sees it as a birthday gift to the bar after 15 years of operating in Singapore.
The process of securing this record took two months, he says, and involved getting official documents from the Building and Construction Authority, as well as bringing expert witnesses on-site. He estimates that the entire process cost upwards of $20,000.
“It’s a little bit like knowing you’re the fastest runner in the world, but you still want to win the Olympics, right?” he adds.
